Holistic Psychotherapy

Sabrina Sierra

January 12, 2023 by Sabrina Sierra

As a therapist, I see myself as a collaborator in an unfolding process of collective liberation. I take a holistic approach grounded in cultural humility and an understanding that our lived identities and ancestral lineages greatly impact our struggles and paths to wellness.

I received an MA in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and a BA in Community Studies from UC Santa Cruz. I approach therapy with an interest in spirituality, archetypes, and consciousness. I am also grounded in material realities and bring a critical social justice framework to my practice. Issues related to racism, colonization, and assimilation are key areas of focus for me. Additionally, I have devoted several years to intersectional gender-justice work centered on the experiences of female, trans, and non-binary people, especially youth.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area and identify as mestiza or multiracial with recent generations of my family immigrating from the Philippines and Guatemala. Outside of my family of origin, I’ve found community through participation in DIY & QTPOC arts and music scenes and activist groups.

Tending to ourselves empowers us to more positively evolve our relationships, communities, and world. Supporting you in nurturing self-compassion, connecting to your inner-wisdom, and aligning with your personal values is my intention.

As a psychotherapist, I work on the level of the heart. I bring warmth, presence, deep empathy, and unconditional compassion to my clients. My work is grounded in mindfulness which allows us to open up to our experience with presence and compassion which supports change rather than judgment which keeps us stuck. I believe we have a natural capacity for growth, healing, and self-actualization which often gets blocked by our beliefs. I blend mindfulness based therapies such as Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Somatic Awareness with other evidence-based modalities such as Internal Family Systems and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. I also draw from Non-Violent Communication to teach effective communication skills.

What I love most about doing therapy is helping people find self-love and grow their self-worth. I’m passionate about providing an emotionally safe and physically comfortable space for people to connect with themselves and express their deepest truths. I feel a deep honor to be a compassionate witness, support, and guide through times of both darkness and light.

I am a therapist who is certified in Brainspotting & EMDR.  I also integrate Somatic Experiencing and IFS into the therapeutic process.  Self discovery, personal exploration and trauma resolution are part of the process in which healing is promoted in the therapy room.  Neuroscience based methods provide quicker, more thorough and deeper healing of where trauma has been held and may be interfering with your life.

Ayala Kalisher

My approach is somatic, holistic and experiential. This means our work together is not just sitting and talking about what has been or how you want things to be. Working holistically means I recognize the connection between mind, body, spirit and environment. Working in any one of these realms means we’re working with all of them. Working somatically means will explore the wisdom of your body as a gateway to your emotions and the wealth of information about yourself that sometimes the mind can obscure.

All my work, whether with individuals or couples, based in Attachment Theory. Attachment Theory is a well-researched approach to understanding our lifelong development and relationships. We all develop strategies of getting our needs met early in life based on how available, absent and attuned our caregivers are. These early strategies create the blueprint for how we are in our adult relationships and the often unconscious strategies we use with those closest to us. Often what were useful strategies no longer serve us in our adult life and it is now time to learn new ways to move through the world.

Many people never get to see models of what a secure, functioning relationship can look like. Learning what it takes to truly be in one another’s care is a process, no matter what your individual attachment style is.

My work is informed by my training in Hakomi; a somatic and mindfulness approach to psychotherapy. In this approach, we get curious about your felt experience of the world and the ways in which your have organized your way of being to adapt to your experiences. We then explore how to create reparative healing experiences in the room together.

My work with couples is influenced by my training in PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) and Emotionally Focused Therapy. Both approaches are attachment based and all about supporting you and your partner(s) in creating a secure, functioning relationship.

Sometimes life sucks. We start to lose motivation, or focus. We spend too much time ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. We eat and sleep too much or not enough, or find other unhealthy avenues toward so-called happiness. I know how it is, because I’ve been there.

As your therapist, I’ll relate to you as a human first. My practice centers on creating a safe space for my clients to be themselves. I utilize a cognitive-behavioral approach proven to help overcome everyday, real-world challenges. My approach is tailored to maximize your involvement in your own healing, and centers your humanity as a valuable source of guidance.

I have experience working with individuals of all backgrounds and identities, with a particular expertise on working with clients facing depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and trauma. Send me a message, and let’s figure things out together.

Whatever circumstances you may be facing, I am here to walk with you through it. It is my desire to help you live a healthier, more fulfilling life. I specialize in anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences, self-esteem/identity issues, life transitions, and women’s issues. I provide a safe space for individuals to develop personal insight and awareness into the unique parts that make up their entire being. I am passionate about traveling with clients on their personal life path and empowering people to flourish.
My approach to psychotherapy blends psychodynamic and existential theoretical orientations with some acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Each orientation emphasizes a different time era – past, future, and present – all of which are necessary in the psychotherapeutic process to promote holistic mental health.
I currently offer video and phone sessions. I accept BCBS PPO or self-pay.
