This is a full day offering with 2 sessions, (one in the morning & one in the afternoon) as well as a panel discussion with all 3 faculty at the end of the day.
Session 1:
Mind & Matter: Using Social Science to Facilitate Social Justice in Our Social Services
Featuring: Aziza Belcher-Platt, Ph.D
– Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and discuss cognitive and behavioral challenges that contribute to biases and inhibit anti-racist action in clinical, professional, and institutional settings.
2. Describe and analyze the functions of these challenges in intra- and interpersonal, institutional, and systemic racism.
3. Distinguish between psuedo and passive anti-racist actions and actual and intentional anti-racist actions
4. Practice strategies to increase cognitive flexibility and negotiate our own mental barriers around race, racism, and anti-racism.
Session 2 :
Different Shades of Self: True Dialogue on Skin Color, Privilege & Bias
Featuring: Kavita Avula, Psy.D., CGP and Marcus Hummings, Psy.D., CGP
– Learning Objectives:
1. Define and identify microaggressions that are not as readily apparent.
2. Practice cultural humility rather than projecting assumptions.
3. Describe Dr. Leticia Nieto’s Target and Agent Skill Models.
4. Discuss how to work through internalized biases, including power imbalances between and among BIPOC group members.
5. Analyze whether repair of micro-aggressions is effective or ineffective.
