Cultural Awareness When Working with African Americans

This is a three hour continuing education training that will review racism, oppression, and discrimination, with a particular emphasis on how these things affect the African-American community. This course unpacks the importance of not overlooking the cultural aspects of African-American clients, but the course rather encourages one to embrace the African-American culture and invite it into the therapeutic relationship and work.

The course schedule is as follows:

A review of African-American history (1.5 hours)
A lecture on effective ways to work with the African-American community (1.5 hours)

Breaks will be given but are not counted towards the CE time awarded. You MUST be part of the mental health field and licensed in the state of California to receive CE credits (see below for credential requirements).

The goal for this training is for participants to increase their cultural awareness and sensitivity when working with individuals who identify as being part of the African-American community.

The learning objectives for the training are as follows:

Participants will be able to identify 1 stereotype or judgment they hold against the African-American community, which will help them begin to challenge their implicit bias.
Participants will be able to make the correlation between 3 historically traumatic events in African-American history, and how these events are connected to symptoms of repetitive trauma in the African-American community.
Participants will learn 4 steps that they can incorporate into their work, which will assist them in effectively working with the African-American community.
Participants will learn 4 behaviors they should avoid engaging in when working with African-Americans, which will reduce ineffectiveness of their work with this population.
