Ethical Issues Working with Transgender Clients [evergreen]

This course uses materials I have produced based on the WPATH Standards of Care and the APA Guidelines on Working with Transgender and Gender Non–Conforming Clients. It is primarily all reading materials.

Some course content is used also in the LGBT ethics course and the Introduction to Working with TGNC clients course.

I include additional recommended reading/viewing that I encourage you to read/view. Many of the lessons also include a reflective question which I encourage you to spend some time with.

Cathy Hanville, LCSW is a therapist in private practice in Albany, CA. She has been in private practice since 2001. She is a EMDRIA Certified EMDR therapist and also has her WPATH Certificate as a Gender Specialist.

This course is appropriate for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs.

This course meets the qualifications for six hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs, and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. It meets the requirements for CA 6 CEU Law and Ethics Requirement.

Learning Objectives:
1. The participant will be able to describe the difference between Gender Non-Conformity and Gender Dysphoria.
2. Participants will be able to list at least five examples of the WPATH standards of care as they relate to the mental health treatment of transgender clients.
3. The participant will be able to name three relevant ethical standards when working with transgender clients.
4. The participant will be able to state three principles of affirmative therapy for adults with gender concerns.

Program Goal:
Students will be able to demonstrate competency with ethical issues that may arise when working with transgender clients.
