Ethical Concerns In Closed Adoptions: When Access Is Denied To Adoptees

In this session Sabra Starnes – who herself is an adoption professional, adoptive parent, and therapist – will explore the current and past legal restrictions to accessing identifying information in closed adoptions in the United States. Sabra will share some of the factors professionals must consider in order to ethically and effectively navigate the adoption process. Special focus will be placed on the ethical responsibility that adoption workers have to support the adoptee through their adoption.

Participants will:
1. Explore some of the clinical challenges of ensuring all the rights of the triad in accessing identifying information.
2. Discuss the emotional impact of not having access to genetic and identifying information can have on an Adoptee.
3. Analyze the current and past laws on accessing identifying information in closed adoptions in the United States.
4. Discuss the benefits and obstacles Adoptee’s can experience when using genetic DNA social, the internet and social media to access identifying information on their own.

mental health professionals, child welfare workers, social workers, counselors.
